About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate elementary listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in everyday German language;
- communicate in German with some depth on selected topics of everyday life, such as talking about self, family and friends; discussing hobbies and interests; and providing information about living arrangements;
- apply a basic knowledge of contemporary German cultural and social norms and German society; and
- use cognitive skills to analyse and synthesise information.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and one of the most important international languages. It is the official language of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg and is also an official language of Belgium and Switzerland. This subject is designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of German. The emphasis throughout the subject is on the acquisition of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in everyday German. You will also discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Language Assessment 1: 1500 words (equivalent). Assessment Notes: A collection of learner-centred, personally relevant tasks and activities that foster receptive and/or productive language skills. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
